Gender, IT, question

How do you represent gender in a DB ?

Gender, IT, question

@papey a freeform text field. if there is something you actually want to filter on you should collect that data more specifically

Gender, IT, question

@papey another option could be a table with freeform text fields of genders that are user populated, and then the user profile could have a one to many relationship with the selected gender tags

Gender, IT, question

@papey
It really depends on the domain. What would you need this information for?

Gender, IT, question

@lunar historical research on theater for gf's thesis

Gender, IT, question

@papey
So it's not about which pronouns to use. Ok.

Mh… what kind of question of question needs answers? That's the key.

Gender, IT, question

@lunar not sure but it's mainly about repartition. For example, with 20 000 shows entries, knowing that most of the script contains a woman what is the w/m repartition in all the actors (it's known that man plays women roles)

Gender, IT, question

@papey
Maybe just do ENUM('man', 'woman', 'unspecified', 'undetermined'') then?

Gender, IT, question

@lunar was my first idea yes

Gender, IT, question

@lunar forgot to mention it, it's about theater in XVIIIth century

re: Gender, IT, question

@papey VARCHAR(666)

Gender, IT, question

@papey i don't, i only save "title of civility" which is the title the person use (it can be Mr, Mx, Ms… but also Dr, Pr…)

And I use gender neutrality to accord sentences

Gender, IT, question

@papey is gender important for the use of the site?

Gender, IT, question

@maloki yep, historical research

Gender, IT, question

@papey I think it would be valuable to contextualize that in the question, for better answers. 😅

Gender, IT, question

@maloki i'm writting it in a anwser in another thread, would paste it in few seconds
