Follow

Hey, does anyone wanna join forces and delete their twitter account on the same day next week?

I say next week so people get time to download their archive and connect with people elsewhere as well, and I imagine if a lot of people request their archive around the same time it may create a bump in the system.

Who wants to build a better version of the old Mastodon Bridge?

I dunno if Twitter still allows that part of their API (because they've made it worse and worse lately).

Anyways: Connect your Twitter and your Mastodon account see if your friends have signed up on Twitter (and indicated so by also using the bridge)

Maybe a feature for auto-follow.

And extra feature for re-creating lists (if possible) from Twitter. because that's some of my friends biggest concern about moving to Mastodon. They have curated lists for over 10 years.

Should probably also let you connect other services like Instagram, Facebook (if you want) etc.

I know ti's not for a lot of us established people, but for some people it's a dealbreaker.

Should also allow connecting other fedi-software on the same "account". So support GoToSocial, Pleroma, pixelfed, etc etc.

Who wants to create a curated version of Invite only servers

Who wants to create and host a list of invite only servers?

We have a lot of GOOD protected communities here, and I believe we can extend a hand to onboard a lot of our friends, or help our friends find a good home on any of those.

Extended functionality could be:
The curated site can do some of the hurdles for new users, like match them with a server, ask for an invite on their behalf etc (or have access to a limited set of invites / server dpeending on what the server wants).

I say server but we know I mean community.

Does anyone want to create a Welcome Onboard server for new users, to off-load mastodon Social?

Similar to what Mastodon.art does, it could allow sign-ups but they'd have to be approved.

This server should be a place where people get time to learn.

I think running hometown would be useful, because you can set the default to be local only, so before you start federating your new messages, you get to learn about what it all means.

People from different cultural backgrounds can be moderators and onboarders on this server. (We can set up a funding model to help pay for people doing this work).

I am putting these ideas out there, because I don't have the spoons to take any of them and run with it. I will burn myself out before I even begin.

So I'm asking you all, our greater community on here, to help pull this load.

Heck, take 2 weeks off work to build a new shiney project with some other friends if you're in a lush IT job anyways.

Day suggestions for leaving Twitter together on the same day next week.

Multiple choice, because you can choose what is best for you. Starting from a week from today.

3 day vote. Turn on notifications for poll results if you want to see the results afterwards.

We talk about if we want to change the work we need to start with organizing our communites.

Those communities can be online too. We can do good in the next coming weeks leading up to the Twitter TOS change.

We have a chance, to organize, and help each other create communities that our friends who haven't been ready to leave Twitter yet can join and feel okay about.

Something something, iron and hot.

Please boost this one, if not the entire thread for reach.

On Leaving Twitter Tomorrow Sunday

Okay, I never followed up on this, and then I took a few days break (i'm still taking a break).

I dunno if anyone will actually delete their Twitter account tomorrow, and I was hoping more people would join.

I've downloaded my archive and am ready to pull the trigger, but I can't pull any more organizing on here. Because I'm going back on my break after this post.

For the relevans of this thread, I will allow all follow requests until this is scheduled etc. Since I'm expecting people want to see follow ups.

@maloki The moderators need to understand this is going to be EXCEPTIONALLY difficult; that it will drain them; that they will be attacked both emotionally and on-the-wire; and that there will be disagreements among the moderators.

Disagreements are fine and proof that people are human and care about the situations, but it is important that the -core idea- be maintained.

So that core idea has to be first and foremost in choosing moderators.

And you're going to need a LOT more moderators than usual. Just to offload the amount of stress from "a few points of pressure" to "a good number of points."

It's an excellent idea, and I hope it takes off and it's able to happen.

I would not be able to do this at this time.

Does anyone want to create a Welcome Onboard server for new users, to off-load mastodon Social?

@Truck Yeah, that's why I think it needs to be a decently moderated place, but also only accept people based on their application, so we don't take on obvious shitheels this particular onboarding community wants to have to deal with.

obviously some will slip through, but I've been watching the work @welshpixie has done over on .art and I was inspired.

I dunno if the application part is a built in feature or a separate thing they are doing over there.

Does anyone want to create a Welcome Onboard server for new users, to off-load mastodon Social?

@maloki @Truck Aww <3

The application is a default feature of stock Mastodon - you can have applications turned on but allow blank entries, or you can make the field required (which we have) - it helps weed out spammers a lot.

@welshpixie @maloki

oh wow, I didn't realize that you were the proprietor of mastodon.art - I mean, that's one of the best examples of why the Fediverse is awesome.

I just figured you were yet another awesome person there (:

And, ok, well, yes, the application step would reduce this from 'an unmitigated mess' to manageable.

(Still can't do it _right now._ For reasons. Maybe... in a month or two, I could theoretically apply as a moderator.)
(This also applies to "why truck can't make the demoscene instance right now." But the things I said are basically what a friend ( @Shifter ) said to me about the demoscene instance. Only he used fewer words, because he's capable of doing that.)

@Truck It's more than okay to not be able to do anything right now, that's why I started this conversation because i can't either, I will probably break myself if I try.

But I can plant seeds and get htings going.

Who wants to build a better version of the old Mastodon Bridge?

@maloki can you send me a link to locate Twitter people on here? I am still looking for a viable solution to see which people have moved over here. I think I found one, but it does it work reliably

Who wants to build a better version of the old Mastodon Bridge?

@weirdwriter The old link is defunct, so I assume it doesn't exist anymore.

Who wants to build a better version of the old Mastodon Bridge?

@weirdwriter Which one did you find?

Who wants to build a better version of the old Mastodon Bridge?

@maloki I found this one, but it outputs phantom results that New Users will have to watch out for https://www.commotionmade.com/

Who wants to build a better version of the old Mastodon Bridge?

@weirdwriter wow that looks like complete and utter bollocks

Who wants to build a better version of the old Mastodon Bridge?

@maloki There is also sites that allow you to follow Twitter posts on Mastodon, but, unfortunately, if Twitter folks add alt text, that is not carried over using sites like https://birdsite.wilde.cloud/ they have to use an official crossposter for alt text to carry over.

Who wants to build a better version of the old Mastodon Bridge?

@weirdwriter This isn't what I'm talking about at all though. :)

Who wants to build a better version of the old Mastodon Bridge?

@maloki
Crossposting to Facebook is not possible, as far as I know.

I have sometimes considered creating an account on Twitter to try to see if I can get more people on Fedi then. Though I have not done so yet and I am still not sure whether it is a viable option. And I would then try to use the Friendica built-in Twitter bridge thing.

Who wants to build a better version of the old Mastodon Bridge?

@storydragon I am not talking about cross posting.

It's about seeing what accounts your friends made on Fedi, by connecting both, so you can see each other in a convenient list.

Who wants to build a better version of the old Mastodon Bridge?

@storydragon I understand that the name bridge is misleading.

Who wants to build a better version of the old Mastodon Bridge?

@maloki
Ah!
I did not even know such a tool existed.

Who wants to build a better version of the old Mastodon Bridge?

@storydragon It doesn't now, it did 5-ish years ago, I dunno when it stopped existing

Who wants to build a better version of the old Mastodon Bridge?

@maloki
That explains why I never heard of it before, for I am only active on Mastodon since one year and a bit.

@maloki I would but my best friend is there and he won't switch to here

On Leaving Twitter Tomorrow Sunday

@maloki I was waiting for this actually, I'll be deleting mine tomorrow then !

On Leaving Twitter Tomorrow Sunday

@maloki I'll delete mine tomorrow as well, I never talk to anyone there! 👍

Leaving Twitter on May 22nd

@maloki It's done on my end! What about the rest? :boost_ok:

@Tattooed_mummy that's more than fair, I know a lot of people have, but I also know a lot of people still cross post.

@maloki @Tattooed_mummy I'm really torn. A lot of people I know haven't moved, and I'm concerned about #HomeEducation community given what's coming legislation wise

@Liveotherwise @maloki twitter T&Cs are changing I think, so might drive more to leave

@Tattooed_mummy @maloki I saw a pop up, but I haven't checked what the actual changes are yet

@Liveotherwise that makes sense.
The thing is there's only so far you can let yourself be pushed when it comes to shit like this, and I think this TOS change is a good time to put a foot down for everyone that want to foster better communities.
@Tattooed_mummy

@maloki Love the idea, but I need to keep the Twitter account until I find replacement for a number of lists I keep there. I did however delete all followings last week. And I have seen a lot of people complaining about their followers count going down.

@GoblinQuester 🤷‍♀️

That's why the rest of the thread is there.
To see if people can hack together stuff by the end of the month to help people make it off.

@maloki I would, but I don't want a fascist taking my username and URL. It's linked in a lot of places, so I don't want that URL to lead to a Nazi account. I've largely left Twitter behind. My twitter is completely automated but I still wish there was a working bridge!

Unsolicited input

@weirdwriter Have you tried https://moa.party/ as a bridge? It works well for me. @maloki

Unsolicited input

@naga @maloki Could you explain how you can see which of your Twitter friends are on Mastodon using your suggestion? It looks to be just another Twitter crossposter, and I already have one that posts from Mastodon to Twitter.

Unsolicited input

Yeah, I think there's an issue with the terminology, a lot of people think it's a cross poster in talking about. It's not.

@weirdwriter @naga

Unsolicited input

@maloki @weirdwriter ah, yes, I misunderstood. It's just a cross-poster (I haven't been reading Maloki's thread)

@maloki I would love to see a bridge, I think it would make a big difference to people wanting to cross over. I only know two people here from Twitter.

Choosing an instance is also a lot harder than it should be. The instances.social tool is promising, but not well publicised, and I don't think my instance is on it.

@yingtai this is why I suggested a curated list for well moderated invite only servers. 😅

I know it's not prefect, but sometimes it's 100 times safer

@maloki I know this sounds weird, but I might have been put off by a curated list of well-moderated invite-only servers. I actually prefer the way instances.social does it - they ask you what kind of policies you are looking for, then they return a list of suitable servers.

Explanation follows ...

@maloki I was quite apprehensive about Mastodon's active moderation culture before I crossed over. I'm a sex blogger, so I know many people who have been burned by Twitter's moderation policies. We're used to living in the dumpster, it takes time to convince us we belong in a nice neighbourhood.
