fediverse poll #2 (edited), boost ok

(edited version for clarity)

How much do you spend monthly on hosting your pleroma/masto/masto fork/pixelfed/funkwhale/reel2bits/etc. ?

Boost super welcome

Note: I'm after instances with less than a 300 active users weekly.

Note 2: if you have more users, just reply to the poll with the amount of users.

Note 3: if you run other services on that VPS, make a guess of how much it cost proportionally

Question to Masto/Fedi Admins

Would you be so kind to answer the question in the poll above ?

That would literately make my day :sparkles_indigo:

re: fediverse poll #2 (edited), boost ok

@kyzh answered based on linernotes.club (USD $44/month) rather than the toot-lab (USD $negligible/month)

re: fediverse poll #2 (edited), boost ok

@djsundog if you can you are able to vote twice.
I'm interested mostly in the $negligible per month actually

re: fediverse poll #2 (edited), boost ok

@kyzh I run the toot-lab on an old laptop in our basement - I would still be paying for our internet service even without the toot-lab, so it's a little electricity and a minor fraction of bandwidth.

re: fediverse poll #2 (edited), boost ok

@djsundog I guess my point was more than that's yet another instance that run for under 3$ so that it would count towards saying most instance cost less than 3$ a month to run :)

I appreciate that you are saying it basicaly cost 0.
If I had more vote options, I would have put 0$ where you likely would have fall under for the toot lab !

re: fediverse poll #2 (edited), boost ok

@kyzh okay, added a lessthan3 vote to account for the toot-lab ;)

fediverse poll #2 (edited), boost ok

@kyzh pixelfed.de runs on about 10€/mon

fediverse poll #2 (edited), boost ok

@kyzh answered >$45 but that was based on the kubernetes cluster + object storage instance i set up on DO to see how it'd go. probably would've been ~$80/mo if i hadn't stopped early due to DO k8s not being production stable

fediverse poll #2 (edited), boost ok

@alexis we had a lot of problem with platform9 k8s support, I hope you didn't move your stuff there :D

fediverse poll #2 (edited), boost ok

@kyzh nah, i would've gone to EKS but the prices were a bit nosebleed level and i ran out of time for further experimentation anyway

when i get around to doing it again, i'm just gonna do droplet + object store, the scalability/complexity tradeoff with k8s is in the wrong place for a personal instance imo

fediverse poll #2 (edited), boost ok

@alexis EKS saves money if you go from EC2 to eks I guess.

And yeah k8s does bring a lot of overhead in dealing with complexities.
We found that it was worth it at work because we had all the tools ready, just had to point it somewhere else.

But yeah for a personal instance, openshift might be achieving similar goals with less work.

fediverse poll #2 (edited), boost ok

@kyzh oh yeah we use the hell out of it at work, that was where i picked up enough knowledge to try it at home, really wanted to end up with some solid docs to hand over to the masto maintainers but kinda didn't get there in the end

it was fun, though! learned a fair bit, for sure

fediverse poll #2 (edited), boost ok

@kyzh I answered less than $/£/€ since I'm hosting a Mastodon instance at home on an older Raspberry Pi 2 that I had kicking around. It's single user at the moment, and it's an alt account for me so I'm hardly doing anything with it... but so far it's been quite stable.

That's not counting time spent waiting on progress bars/tinkering, of course.

fediverse poll #2 (edited), boost ok

@ItsTheManOnTheMoon statistically speaking and for the question I'm trying to answer, 0$/£/€ is less than 3.

Also regardless how much people pay to host stuff they spend lot of time doing backups, sysadmin things and instance admin etc.

The fedi is such a time consuming beast on the admin part of things.

Great to hear that you are running it on a pie tho :)

Question to Masto/Fedi Admins

@kyzh Uh... this one's hard to quantify because it's one physical server I bought a few years ago that does *all the things* at home, running 24/7 in a rack in the basement, hooked up to my home internet connection that I also use to VPN into work, who reimburses me about 25% of that cost.

~$150/mo difference on internet
~100W constant power draw at ~$0.07-0.12 CAD/kWh

But Masto specifically? It's 3 users and really low traffic. Do I count the disk space? Hmm...

Question to Masto/Fedi Admins

@kyzh *puts in 'less than $15' as his best guess* ❤️

At least if I tried to guess how much of the system's resources it uses, if I hypothetically bought the setup the almost 2 years ago when I joined, and amortized it until now, but yeah. Self-hosting a nearly-single-user instance at home on top of all the other things is a bit of a wild-ass-guess. ;/

Question to Masto/Fedi Admins

@kithop @kyzh same sitch. My CDN costs me about 3 bucks and I figure the costs of everything else costs me at least two so I'm in the under $15 camp.

Question to Masto/Fedi Admins

@kyzh 118 active users this week, $38/mo, on a version of mastodon that doesn't support polls yet :P

Question to Masto/Fedi Admins

@kyzh oh wait, sorry, $38 is for both my VPSes, the mastodon one alone is $28

fediverse poll #2 (edited), boost ok

@kyzh we're on the upper end of the threshold (just over 200 weekly active) - we're on a dedicated server that overall costs 35eur a month + whatever the yearly renewal for the domain is

fediverse poll #2 (edited), boost ok

@kyzh This is a good poll. People need to know how inexpensive it is to have your own server.
I run a handful of websites, friendica, pastebin, jiraffe, git, tiny tiny rss, webdav, email, postres and maria databases... I don't even know what all off the top of my head.
€4/month at contabo.com/?show=vps (not clickable on purpose, not to spam)

fediverse poll #2 (edited), boost ok

@kyzh @xuv mastodon.technology cost is currently around $150/month with about 1200 weekly active users

fediverse poll #2 (edited), boost ok

@kyzh I can't vote but <$45 for ~50 active users. Digital Ocean.

fediverse poll #2 (edited), boost ok

@kyzh $85.96 but given that those are 5 dedicated servers I get more resources than a VPS and it's worth it.

46 users, 7 monthly active. I'm also running other services on top.

Server Costs:
$10.99 - Dashboard/Log Aggregation
$10.99 - 4 Core/8GB/2TB - Testing
$17.99 - 4 Core/8GB/2TB - Web
$17.99 - 4 Core/8GB/2TB - Database
$27.00 - 8Core/16GB/6TB - Backups

fediverse poll #2 (edited), boost ok

@kyzh I have two: this one, which has 100~150 active users per week, which is in a linode, with backup and so it's $30 per month. And another one with around 30 per week, which is in hetzner and is €6 per month, manual backups and stuff.
