UK, online shopping 'disability tax'

The govt are looking to introduce an 'online shopping tax', which will of course would disproportionately affect those with a disability who rely on online shopping for everyday life items. Basically, it's a tax on disability.

Action for ME (amongst others) are asking people to read, sign and share their letter to the govt, which is open to signatories until Wednesday 16 September. surveymonkey.co.uk/r/6ZFHGXD

@GwenfarsGarden I was going to comment on how irresponsible this policy is, especially right now, then I remembered that it’s pretty much in line with how the Tories handle disability and this pandemic

UK, online shopping 'disability tax'

@dreadpirateyarr @GwenfarsGarden Or how they handle disability just generally

UK, online shopping 'disability tax'

@dreadpirateyarr sadly, yes. They are continuing to do anything they can to make our lives difficult - so business as usual

UK, online shopping 'disability tax'

@GwenfarsGarden it seems so unnecessary too, because isn't there a VAT on transactions anyway? But when did they need an excuse to make disabled people's lives harder smh.

UK, online shopping 'disability tax'

@ljwrites I'm guessing by doing it this way, it doesn't look like an across the board VAT increase?

But yeh, they need no excuse

UK, online shopping 'disability tax'

@GwenfarsGarden this is horrendous 😠

UK, online shopping 'disability tax'

@gid yep. that's the UK govt.

UK, online shopping 'disability tax'

@GwenfarsGarden Argh, that's terrible. What possible justification? They already still got all the taxes they would from shopping in person, don't they?

UK, online shopping 'disability tax'

@naga I don't
know what their justification is and yes, the tax is the same whether online or in person.

I'm guessing they are trying to avoid an across the board VAT (tax) rise, so are trying to sneak in increases in other ways. I'm also guessing this is being 'floated' to see if they could get away with it, and if not, they can back down without it seeming like a u-turn.

UK, online shopping 'disability tax'

@GwenfarsGarden Assholes

UK, online shopping 'disability tax'

@naga yep

UK, online shopping 'disability tax'

@naga @GwenfarsGarden My guess is pressure from the high street retailers, who are all worried about permanent loss of city centre business as people switch to working from home.

UK, online shopping 'disability tax'

@ghost_bird @naga I can see that being a reason. It's frustrating that instead of getting the govt to give them tax breaks, they want customers to pay more. Makes me sick. But then, capitalism...

UK, online shopping 'disability tax'

@GwenfarsGarden @naga One thing I learned from UKuncut was how few of the big high street chains pay much UK tax in the first place. I don’t expect either they or the Tories want to encourage too much scrutiny in that direction.
