#fediblock davidhamilton @ mastodon.scot
This guy is the chair of the Scottish police federation, which is the "union" that serves to protect police officers from inquiries into their misconduct.
Since arriving he has used a twitter cross-poster to promote police violence against citizens (in contravention of mastodon.scot's own rule 5: "No incitement of violence or promotion of violent ideologies.")
This isn't new for Hamilton, who only 2 years ago victim-blamed peaceful anti-eviction protesters after they came under attack by the fascist Scottish Defense League. He refused to condemn the fascists and drew a false equivalence between the two groups. https://www.thenational.scot/news/18527358.scottish-police-federation-blasted-comments-george-square-disorder/
In the past, he has also referred to people resisting arrest as "animals" and attacked the independence of the judiciary for not aligning with his violent ideology.
Despite having received a number of reports against him, .scot has yet to remove him from their servers. This may be due to overload, as in a matter of days their numbers have exploded, with thousands of new sign ups each day. So please do report more.
At best, he is a dangerous, violent ideologue that represents a clear threat to people on this network. At worst, he is a fascist sympathiser.
Do with this information what you will.
@Em There are lots of reports of 'this guy bad, please block'. What the instance needs are specific examples on mastodon.scot where he's broken the rules with his posts on that instance. Happy to moderate users based on their behaviour on that instance, I can't police (only part pun intended) what people may or may not do outside their activity on the instance.
@rodti since I can only assume you'll also apply this policy to other types of terrible people with whom I'd rather not interact, I'm leaning towards defederating my instance from mastodon.scot
@ansuz That's entirely your decision, I'm just trying to moderate based on what I can objectively see posted on my instance, rather than what other people tell me I should do.
@ianbetteridge I understand the position, but at the same time there is a very large body of evidence that if you let fascists get a foot in the door they very quickly push everyone else out. You can deal with it after it escalates, but usually by that point the original members of the community will have moved on.
@ianbetteridge and it's because of that body of evidence that I think "religious" is the wrong word to use here.
@rodti @Em FWIW, this thread moved me from "report and see what happens" to blocking the instance. I understand the argument that you want to moderate only based on what happens on the instance, but in the case of someone who's openly advocating for (state sanctioned) violence, I think waiting and reacting is the wrong approach.
Generalist Hometown instance with a strong focus on community standards. No TERF, no SWERF, no Nazi, no Centrist.
